1948-Present
SUCCESS FROM THE START

The first Florida team to compete in Little League Baseball's international tournament set an impressive standard. A league from St. Petersburg traveled to Pennsylvania for the second annual Little League World Series in 1948, and took second place behind a squad from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Other Florida leagues soon followed in St. Petersburg's footsteps: over time a total of 22 Florida leagues have qualified for the Little League World Series, including Tampa's Citrus Park Little League in 2008.

1974 SOFTBALL

When Little League Baseball added the softball divisions for girls, Florida was first in line for the new programs. Tampa, Florida took the first Little League Softball World Series championship in 1974

HOME OF SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Since their inception, the Challenger division and the Urban Initiative program have been embraced by Florida. Florida plays host to both the Challenger and Urban Initiative Jamboree’s annually.

SINCE 1956
DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS

In the early 1950s, Little League expanded to unprecedented proportions. Over the next few years, Little League Headquarters proceeded to divide the total number of leagues into districts, each with an administrative director drawn from its own ranks. In 1956 the Board of Directors authorized a plan in which local leagues would elect volunteer leaders within each district to create a link in the line of volunteer service.
